Hifi & ExxonMobil Present HDS Leak Detection
Technical Presentation:
spe Putting Theory Into Practice: Field Trial of DFOS on a Pipeline
This joint presentation with ExxonMobil highlights the real world application of distributed fiber optic sensing for pipeline monitoring and leak detection. The field trial focused on evaluating how Hifi’s High Fidelity Dynamic Sensing technology performs under actual operating conditions, including environments with high levels of background activity.
The testing program included a range of simulated leak scenarios across different pressures and flow conditions. Results demonstrated that the system was able to detect the majority of leak events with a high level of accuracy while maintaining zero false positives. Detection occurred within minutes, providing operators with timely insight into changes along the pipeline.
The study also showed how combining multiple sensing inputs, including acoustic, temperature, and strain data, can improve confidence in identifying and characterizing events. This provides a more complete understanding of pipeline conditions and supports more reliable monitoring over long distances.
These results demonstrate the potential for distributed fiber sensing systems to provide consistent performance in real operating environments. The findings support the use of advanced sensing technologies to improve visibility across pipeline infrastructure and enhance overall asset management.
